Dr. Mieke Lane's Medical Mission to Bangladesh
I have always been interested in medical missions. In January of 2008 I finally had the opportunity to participate in one with the Korean Methodist Church. We went to help the women of Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is a country in Southeast Asia between India and Burma on the Bay of Bengal. It is a very poor nation and as a consequence women's healthcare needs are severely under met. The medical team with which I was a part had the chance to perform twenty-four gynecological surgeries in three days. Most of the surgeries were performed due to complete vaginal prolapse, where the uterus is coming out of the body. Due to limited equipment some of the surgeries were completed under local anesthesia. All of these women went home with Tylenol. It was an eye opening experience for me about global medicine.
In the end we were able to make a big difference in those women's lives. It is truly a wonderful gift to see what a difference a little help can give to someone in need. Please feel free to look at some of my photos posted and share in my experience.
